What is a 5-OH INDOL ACETIC ACID (5HIAA), 24 HRS URINE?

5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5-HIAA), 24-Hour Urine is a test that measures the amount of 5-HIAA, the main breakdown product of serotonin, excreted in urine over 24 hours. The test is primarily used to evaluate suspected serotonin-producing neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumors. It may be recommended when symptoms such as persistent flushing, unexplained diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or wheezing suggest excess serotonin production.

FAQs

What is 5-HIAA?

5-HIAA is a metabolite produced when the body breaks down serotonin. Measuring it in urine provides an indirect indication of serotonin metabolism.

What are neuroendocrine tumors?

Neuroendocrine tumors are tumors arising from cells that have characteristics of both nerve cells and hormone-producing cells. Some can produce excess serotonin or other hormones.

Does a high 5-HIAA level mean I have a tumor?

No. Elevated 5-HIAA can have several causes, including certain foods, medications, and medical conditions. Additional investigations are needed to determine the underlying cause.

Can a normal 5-HIAA result rule out a neuroendocrine tumor?

Not always. Some tumors do not produce significant amounts of serotonin or may release it intermittently. Your healthcare provider may recommend other tests if clinical suspicion remains.

Can medications affect the 5-HIAA result?

Yes. Several medications can interfere with 5-HIAA testing. Provide your healthcare provider with a complete list of medicines and supplements before the test.
