What is a ANTI STREPTOLYSIN - O (ASO) TITRE?

Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) Titre is a blood test that measures antibodies produced by the immune system against streptolysin O, a substance released by Group A Streptococcus bacterium. The test is primarily used to identify evidence of a recent streptococcal infection, especially when complications such as rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis are suspected. It helps support diagnosis when the original infection has already resolved.

FAQs

Can ASO levels be normal after a recent strep infection?

Yes. Antibody levels may not yet have risen sufficiently if testing is performed early. Some streptococcal infections may also produce a limited ASO response.

Can a skin infection increase ASO levels?

Certainly, some streptococcal skin infections can lead to an antibody response. However, ASO levels may not rise as reliably after skin infections as they do after throat infections.

How long after a strep infection does ASO increase?

ASO antibodies generally begin to rise after the infection and may reach higher levels over the following weeks. The exact timing varies between individuals.

What is post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis?

It is a kidney condition that can develop after certain streptococcal infections. ASO testing may help provide evidence of a preceding streptococcal infection.

Can ASO Titre diagnose strep throat?

No. ASO testing is not generally used to diagnose an acute throat infection. A throat swab or rapid streptococcal test may be more appropriate for an active infection.
