Calcium Serum is a blood test that measures the level of calcium in the bloodstream, an essential mineral required for strong bones and teeth, normal muscle contraction, nerve function, and blood clotting. The test is needed to detect abnormal calcium levels and evaluate conditions affecting the parathyroid glands, kidneys, bones, or vitamin D metabolism. It may also help investigate symptoms such as muscle cramps, weakness, or abnormal heart rhythms.
High blood calcium, or hypercalcemia, can occur with parathyroid disorders, certain cancers, excessive vitamin D or calcium intake, and some other medical conditions.
Low calcium, or hypocalcemia, may occur with vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, parathyroid disorders, low magnesium, or other conditions affecting calcium regulation.
Mild high calcium may cause no symptoms. Higher levels can cause excessive thirst, frequent urination, constipation, nausea, weakness, fatigue, confusion, or other symptoms.
Low calcium may cause muscle cramps, tingling around the mouth or in the fingers, muscle spasms, weakness, or abnormal heart rhythms when significantly reduced.
Total calcium includes both protein-bound and free calcium, while ionized calcium measures the biologically active, unbound form circulating in the blood.
