What is a CYTOMEGALOVIRUS (CMV) ANTIBODIES PANEL IgG & IgM?

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibodies Panel IgG & IgM is a blood test that detects IgG and IgM antibodies produced in response to CMV infection. Testing both antibodies helps assess whether a person has been exposed to CMV and may provide clues about the timing of infection. It is needed to evaluate suspected CMV infection, particularly during pregnancy, in newborns, or in individuals with weakened immunity.

FAQs

What is cytomegalovirus (CMV)?

CMV is a common virus from the herpesvirus family. After infection, it can remain in the body in an inactive state and may reactivate later.

What does a positive CMV IgG result mean?

A positive IgG result generally indicates previous exposure to CMV. IgG can remain detectable for life after infection.

What does a positive CMV IgM result mean?

A positive IgM result may occur with a recent primary infection, reactivation, or reinfection. It does not by itself confirm when the infection occurred.

What does it mean if both CMV IgG and IgM are positive?

This pattern can occur during a recent infection, reactivation, or persistent IgM response. Additional testing may be needed to determine the timing and significance.

What does it mean if CMV IgG is positive and IgM is negative?

This generally indicates previous CMV exposure without evidence of a current IgM response. Clinical context may still be important.

What does it mean if CMV IgG is negative and IgM is positive?

This may indicate a very recent infection, but false-positive IgM results can occur. Repeat or additional testing may be recommended.

What does it mean if both CMV IgG and IgM are negative?

It generally suggests no detectable previous CMV exposure or recent antibody response at the time of testing. Very early infection may not yet produce detectable antibodies.
