What is a FECAL ELASTASE?

Fecal Elastase is a stool test that measures the level of elastase, a digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas. It is primarily used to assess pancreatic exocrine function and determine whether the pancreas is producing sufficient digestive enzymes. The test is needed when pancreatic insufficiency is suspected, particularly in people with persistent diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, bloating, or nutrient deficiencies, and can support evaluation of chronic pancreatic disorders.

FAQs

What is pancreatic exocrine insufficiency?

It is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce or release enough digestive enzymes, making it difficult for the body to properly digest and absorb nutrients.

What does a low fecal elastase level mean?

A low result may indicate reduced pancreatic enzyme production and can support a diagnosis of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. The result should be interpreted with clinical findings.

What does a normal fecal elastase level mean?

A normal result generally suggests that pancreatic exocrine function is adequate, although the result should be considered alongside symptoms and other investigations.

Can Fecal Elastase detect pancreatic disease?

The test evaluates pancreatic exocrine function rather than directly detecting a specific pancreatic disease. Additional tests may be required to identify the underlying cause.

What conditions can cause pancreatic exocrine insufficiency?

Causes may include chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic surgery, pancreatic disorders, and certain conditions affecting digestion or pancreatic function.
