What is a FILARIA ANTIBODY IgM?

Filaria Antibody IgM is a blood test that detects IgM antibodies produced by the immune system in response to exposure to filarial parasites. The test may be needed to support the evaluation of suspected filarial infection, particularly when symptoms or clinical findings suggest infection. It can provide useful information about immune response, but results should be interpreted alongside symptoms, exposure history, and other diagnostic tests.

FAQs

Can eosinophil count help in diagnosing filariasis?

An increased eosinophil count can occur with some filarial infections, but eosinophilia is not specific and a normal eosinophil count does not necessarily exclude infection.

Can children undergo the Filaria IgM test?

Yes, when clinically indicated. A healthcare provider can determine whether testing is appropriate based on the child's symptoms and exposure history.

What is filariasis?

Filariasis is a parasitic infection caused by filarial worms. Lymphatic filariasis can affect the lymphatic system and may lead to swelling and other complications.

How is filariasis transmitted?

Lymphatic filariasis is generally transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, which introduces microscopic filarial larvae into the body.

What does a positive Filaria IgM result mean?

A positive result indicates that filaria-specific IgM antibodies have been detected. It may suggest recent or ongoing immune response but does not by itself confirm an active infection.

What does a negative Filaria IgM result mean?

A negative result means the tested IgM antibodies were not detected. However, it does not always completely exclude filarial infection.
