What is a FUNGAL STAINING?

Fungal staining is a rapid laboratory technique in which special dyes or reagents (such as KOH, lactophenol cotton blue, or calcofluor white) are applied to clinical specimens like skin scrapings, nail clippings, sputum, or tissue to make fungal elements visible under a microscope. It is needed to quickly detect and identify fungi causing infections of the skin, nails, lungs, or other sites, enabling timely diagnosis and appropriate antifungal treatment when culture results may take longer.
