What is a GENEXPERT MTB/XDR?

GeneXpert MTB/XDR is a rapid molecular test that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) DNA in a clinical sample and identifies resistance to key anti-tuberculosis drugs, including isoniazid, fluoroquinolones, and second-line injectable drugs. It is needed to support the rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis and detect drug-resistant TB, helping clinicians select appropriate treatment promptly and reduce the risk of treatment failure and disease transmission.

What does XDR mean?

XDR refers to extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. The test detects resistance-associated mutations to multiple important anti-TB drugs.

Which drug resistances can the test detect?

Depending on the assay, GeneXpert MTB/XDR detects resistance markers for isoniazid, fluoroquinolones, and certain second-line injectable drugs, along with MTB detection.

Does a positive result confirm active tuberculosis?

Detection of MTB supports tuberculosis infection, but the result should be interpreted along with symptoms, imaging, examination, and other laboratory findings.

Does a negative result completely rule out tuberculosis?

No. A negative result does not always exclude TB, particularly when the bacterial load is low or the sample is inadequate.

Can the test detect drug-resistant TB?

Does the test determine whether TB is latent or active?
