What is a GLOMERULAR BASEMENT MEMBRANE (GBM) ANTIBODY, IFA?

Glomerular Basement Membrane (GBM) Antibody, IFA is a blood test that detects autoantibodies directed against the glomerular basement membrane using the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) method. The test is needed to support the evaluation of anti-GBM disease, an autoimmune condition that can cause rapidly progressive kidney inflammation and, in some cases, lung involvement. It may be recommended when symptoms or laboratory findings suggest glomerulonephritis or pulmonary hemorrhage.

FAQs

What does a positive GBM antibody result mean?

A positive result indicates that GBM antibodies have been detected. In the appropriate clinical setting, this can strongly support the diagnosis of anti-GBM disease.

Does a positive GBM antibody result confirm anti-GBM disease?

The result must be interpreted alongside symptoms, kidney function, urine findings, imaging, and other investigations. In some cases, a kidney biopsy may be recommended.

What does a negative GBM antibody result mean?

It means detectable GBM antibodies were not identified by the test. However, a negative result does not completely exclude anti-GBM disease.

Can anti-GBM disease affect the lungs?

Certainly. Anti-GBM antibodies can attack the lungs in some patients, potentially causing pulmonary hemorrhage, which may present as coughing up blood or breathing difficulties.

Can anti-GBM disease affect only the kidneys?

Yes. Some people develop predominantly kidney involvement without significant lung disease.
