Yes. It can demonstrate opacification, fluid, erosion, sclerosis, and other bony or structural changes associated with chronic middle-ear or mastoid disease.
Usually, no special preparation is required for a routine non-contrast HRCT temporal-bone examination. You may be asked to remove earrings, spectacles, hearing aids, or other metallic objects around the head and ears.
Depending on the findings and clinical concern, your doctor may recommend MRI for better evaluation of soft tissues, the facial nerve, inner-ear structures, or suspected cholesteatoma and other conditions that may not be fully characterized by CT.
