What is a HYPERSENSITIVITY PNEUMONITIS (HP) PANEL?

The Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) Panel is a group of blood tests that detects antibodies against specific environmental substances that may trigger an immune reaction in the lungs. The panel is needed to support the evaluation of suspected hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition caused by repeated exposure to certain organic dusts, molds, birds, or other inhaled substances. Results are interpreted alongside symptoms, exposure history, lung function tests, and imaging.

What does a positive HP Panel result mean?

A positive result indicates the presence of antibodies to one or more tested substances and suggests exposure or sensitisation. It does not, by itself, confirm hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Does a positive HP Panel mean I have lung disease?

No. Antibodies can indicate previous or ongoing exposure without proving that the exposure is causing lung inflammation. Clinical findings and imaging are also important.

What does a negative HP Panel result mean?

A negative result means antibodies to the substances included in the panel were not detected. It does not completely exclude hypersensitivity pneumonitis, especially if the relevant trigger is not included in the panel.

What symptoms may lead to HP testing?

Symptoms can include cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, feverishness, chills, or worsening breathing difficulties, particularly after exposure to a suspected environmental trigger.

Can hypersensitivity pneumonitis be caused by bird exposure?

Yes. Repeated exposure to proteins from birds, including feathers and droppings, can trigger hypersensitivity pneumonitis in susceptible individuals.
