Why is MCU (Non-Ionic Contrast) performed?

This examination is commonly performed to evaluate vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary incontinence, bladder outlet obstruction, urethral abnormalities, posterior urethral valves, congenital urinary tract abnormalities, bladder injuries, and other lower urinary tract disorders.

The examination evaluates the urinary bladder, bladder neck, urethra, and the flow of urine during urination. It also helps determine whether urine flows backward into the ureters or kidneys (vesicoureteral reflux).

Can MCU detect bladder abnormalities?

Yes. It can identify bladder diverticula, bladder outlet obstruction, urinary leakage, congenital abnormalities, and structural changes affecting the bladder.

Can MCU detect urethral abnormalities?

Yes. The examination can identify urethral narrowing, posterior urethral valves, urethral obstruction, and other abnormalities that affect urine flow.

How is MCU (Non-Ionic Contrast) performed?

A small urinary catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. The bladder is filled with non-ionic contrast material, and X-ray images are taken while the bladder fills and during urination to evaluate bladder function and urine flow.
