What is a PDL1-IHC?

PD-L1 IHC (Programmed Death-Ligand 1 Immunohistochemistry) is a tissue-based test that detects and measures PD-L1 protein expression in tumour cells and/or immune cells. The test is needed to help determine whether a patient may be eligible for certain immunotherapy treatments, as PD-L1 expression can influence treatment decisions in several cancers. Results are interpreted along with the cancer type, clinical findings, and other pathology or molecular test results.

FAQs

What does PD-L1 stand for?

PD-L1 stands for Programmed Death-Ligand 1, a protein that can help tumour cells evade immune-system recognition.

What does a positive PD-L1 result mean?

It means PD-L1 expression has been detected above the relevant laboratory or assay threshold. Depending on the cancer type and scoring method, this may support the use of specific immunotherapy.

What does a negative PD-L1 result mean?

It means PD-L1 expression was not detected or was below the specified threshold. However, a negative result does not necessarily mean immunotherapy will never be appropriate.

Does a negative PD-L1 result rule out immunotherapy?

Not always. Some immunotherapies may be used regardless of PD-L1 status, depending on the cancer type, treatment guidelines, and other biomarkers.

Does a positive PD-L1 result guarantee that immunotherapy will work?

No. PD-L1 expression is only one factor used in treatment decisions, and response to immunotherapy varies between individuals.
