What is a PLASMA RENIN ACTIVITY?

The Plasma Renin Activity (PRA) test is a blood test that measures the activity of renin, an enzyme secreted by the kidneys that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. Renin plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which controls sodium retention and vascular tone. Doctors recommend this test to evaluate causes of **high blood pressure**, suspected **primary aldosteronism**, or other hormonal imbalances affecting kidney function. It helps guide diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and related disorders.

Additional Information

Also known as/ Other names: PRA Test, Renin Activity, Plasma, Plasma Renin Assay, Renin Blood Test
Parameters: 1
Recommended for: M/F/Others
Sample Type: Blood
Patient Preparation: Drug interactions to be noted: Potassium wasting diuretics, Spironolactone, Eplerenone, Amiloride and Triamterene should be discontinued at least for 4 weeks; Adrenergic blockers, Clonidine, Methyldopa, NSAIDs, Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, Renin inhibitors and Dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonists should be discontinued for 2 weeks. If necessary to maintain hypertension control, patients should be treated with other antihypertensive medications like Verapamil slow-release, Hydralazine, Prazosin, Doxazosin & Terazosin that have lesser effects on Plasma renin levels. Any change in medication should be done in consultation with treating clinician.
Reports: Next Day

FAQs

Why is this test important?

It helps diagnose causes of hypertension, suspected primary aldosteronism, and hormonal imbalances affecting fluid and electrolyte balance.

Who should undergo this test?

Patients with unexplained high blood pressure, suspected adrenal disorders, or abnormal electrolyte levels may be recommended this test.

Does a high PRA result mean disease?

High renin activity may indicate renovascular hypertension, kidney disease, or secondary causes of high blood pressure.

What does a low PRA result mean?

Low renin activity may suggest primary aldosteronism or other adrenal gland disorders.

Can children undergo this test?

Yes, it can be safely performed in children with suspected hormonal or kidney-related hypertension.

Is the test specific for hypertension?

Yes, it is primarily used to investigate causes of high blood pressure and related hormonal imbalances.

Is PRA testing combined with other tests?

Yes, it is often paired with plasma aldosterone measurement to calculate the aldosterone-to-renin ratio.
