What is a USG CRANIAL?

USG Cranial is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the brain performed through the baby's soft spot (fontanelle). It helps diagnose and monitor brain bleeding, hydrocephalus, brain malformations, infections, and other neurological conditions in newborns and young infants without using radiation.

What is USG Cranial?

USG Cranial (Cranial Ultrasound or Neurosonography) is a non-invasive, radiation-free ultrasound examination that evaluates the brain of newborns and young infants through the anterior fontanelle (soft spot on the head).

Why is a USG Cranial performed?

It is performed to detect and monitor brain bleeding (intraventricular hemorrhage), hydrocephalus, brain malformations, brain cysts, infections, hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, and other neurological abnormalities in newborns and infants.

Can USG Cranial detect hydrocephalus?

Yes. It is an effective imaging test for detecting hydrocephalus (excess fluid within the brain) and monitoring changes over time.

Why is USG Cranial commonly performed in premature babies?

Premature infants have a higher risk of brain bleeding and other neurological complications. Cranial ultrasound helps detect these conditions early so that appropriate treatment and monitoring can be provided.

Can USG Cranial be repeated if needed?

Yes. Since it does not use radiation, the examination can be safely repeated to monitor brain development or the progression of neurological conditions.
