X-RAY ABDOMEN ERECT & SUPINE

This examination is commonly performed to investigate abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, constipation, abdominal distension, suspected intestinal perforation, kidney or ureteric stones, swallowed foreign bodies, and other abdominal conditions.

The Supine view provides an overview of the bowel gas pattern and abdominal anatomy, while the Erect view helps detect air-fluid levels and free air beneath the diaphragm, which are important signs of bowel obstruction or gastrointestinal perforation.

The examination evaluates the stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), liver shadow, kidneys, urinary bladder, abdominal soft tissues, bowel gas pattern, and surrounding bony structures.

Yes. It is commonly used to identify bowel obstruction by showing dilated bowel loops, abnormal bowel gas patterns, and multiple air-fluid levels.

Yes. Many calcium-containing kidney and ureteric stones are visible on abdominal X-rays. However, some stones may require a CT scan or ultrasound for better evaluation.
