FAQs

What is an X-Ray Cervical Spine AP, Lateral, Flexion & Extension?

X-Ray Cervical Spine AP, Lateral, Flexion & Extension is a four-view dynamic X-ray examination of the cervical spine (neck). It includes AP (front), Lateral (side), Flexion (forward bending), and Extension (backward bending) views to evaluate both the structure and movement of the cervical spine.

Why is this examination performed?

It is commonly performed to evaluate neck pain, whiplash injuries, spinal instability, traumatic injuries, suspected fractures, cervical spondylosis, degenerative disc disease, postoperative spinal conditions, and abnormal vertebral movement.

Can it detect fractures?

Yes. It can identify fractures, dislocations, compression injuries, and other traumatic abnormalities affecting the cervical spine.

Can this examination detect cervical spondylosis?

Yes. It can reveal signs of cervical spondylosis, including disc space narrowing, bone spurs (osteophytes), and degenerative changes.

Is the procedure painful?

The X-ray itself is painless. However, bending the neck during the Flexion and Extension views may cause temporary discomfort if you have neck pain or a recent injury.
