X-Ray Dynamic Coccyx (Tail Bone) Skiagrams – Lateral Decubitus & Sitting is a specialized X-ray examination that captures side-view (lateral) images of the tail bone (coccyx) in two positions—lying on the side (Lateral Decubitus) and sitting—to assess its movement, alignment, and stability.
It is commonly performed to investigate chronic tailbone pain (coccydynia), trauma, coccygeal instability, fractures, dislocations, abnormal mobility, and degenerative changes affecting the coccyx.
Lateral Decubitus means lying on your side during the X-ray examination. This position provides a baseline image of the coccyx without body weight being applied.
The sitting position places normal body weight on the coccyx, allowing doctors to observe how the tail bone moves under pressure. Comparing the sitting and lying images helps identify abnormal movement or instability.
The examination visualizes the coccyx (tail bone), sacrum, sacrococcygeal joint, intercoccygeal joints, and surrounding bony structures.
A routine coccyx X-ray is taken in a single position, whereas a dynamic coccyx X-ray compares images taken while lying and sitting, making it more effective at detecting abnormal movement or instability.
